Comparing local businesses and their star ratings on a phone

How we rank Tucson businesses

Every list on this site follows the same three steps. No business can pay to change its position.

1. Who is considered

For each of our 86 categories we search Google Maps for Tucson businesses and collect every result, across the metro from Marana and Oro Valley to Vail, Sahuarita, and Green Valley (within 55 km of central Tucson). A business is only considered for a category when Google lists it under a matching business type.

2. Who is eligible

To be ranked, a business needs a Google rating of at least 4.0 stars and at least 10 reviews. Below that there is not enough evidence to call a business one of the best.

3. How they are ordered

Sorting by star rating alone would let a business with three perfect reviews beat one with five hundred near-perfect reviews. Sorting by review count alone would reward size over quality. We do neither.

Instead, each rating is blended with the average rating for its category, in proportion to how few reviews back it up. A business with a handful of reviews is pulled most of the way toward that average. A business with hundreds of reviews keeps almost exactly its own rating. In practice a rating is treated as if it carried 60 extra reviews at the category average.

When two businesses land on essentially the same score, a very small nudge for review volume breaks the tie. That nudge stops growing at 500 reviews, so sheer size never beats a better rating. Exact ties are ordered alphabetically, so the list never reshuffles at random.

Each business holds one spot per list. When Google has duplicate listings for the same business (the same phone number or name), only the higher ranked one is shown. We show the top 25 in each category, and a category only gets a list once at least 8 businesses meet the bar.

Area lists

Some categories also have lists for Oro Valley, Marana, Catalina Foothills, Vail, Sahuarita, and Green Valley. These use the same scores and the same order as the metro list, filtered to businesses whose Google address is in that area. An area list only exists when at least 8 eligible businesses are located there, so a business that serves an area from a Tucson address appears on the main Tucson list instead.

What we do not do

Questions people ask

Do businesses pay to be listed or to rank?

No. Every listing is free and positions come only from public Google ratings and review volume. Claiming a listing lets an owner correct details. It does not move them up or down.

How often are rankings updated?

We refresh the data from Google Maps regularly. The current lists were last refreshed October 2026.

Why is a business with thousands of reviews ranked below one with fewer?

Once a business has a solid base of reviews, its average rating matters more than the raw count. A 5.0 from several hundred customers can outrank a 4.8 from several thousand, because both are well supported and one is higher.

Why is my business missing?

It may be under 4.0 stars, have fewer than 10 reviews, sit outside the Tucson metro, or be listed under a Google category we did not match. Use the add your business form and we will check.
